Found this on that breeders FB page, thanks! https://www.purinaproclub.com/choosing-a-good-bird-dog?fbclid=IwAR0EBUK1iWLgGUyzZaXUPb6uXKBitYENyAb5jsoIPC6e-7JLxuleGC0_bLA
My son and I took the dog and the shotguns for a walk this morning at the Cooke Canyon Hunt Club near Ellensburg Washington. We found six birds and brought down 5 of them! My son used his lightweight 28 gauge CZ double and steel 6's. I used the 1930's 12 gauge Remington 32 over & under with...
To start, I have only trained Labs for waterfowl hunting, we had Spaniols for pheasants when I was young. Really enjoying training and watching dogs work. I am really interested in training a tracking dog for mostly deer but plan to train for any type of recovery. Ive been watching training...
Just out of curiosity, can you train a dog to follow a scent if they seem to have zero natural ability?
We have a family dog who is two years old and is a shelter mutt (the story is that a border collie came in starving with a litter of mix'n'match puppies, and he was the runt of the puppies. He...
Sounds like a training problem to me. Raised two with my kids, great family dogs. Prototypical pheasant dog for the OP too, but they are truly versatile. Not ideal for very cold water work but they are stronger swimmers than labs at the same size.
Dogs have better noses than humans so they have the ability to use them for almost any scent. Training is best just after weening and Dad was known for his excellent tracking Beagles. Older dogs may take a little more time.
Border Collies are known for their brains and are very quick learners...
As others have already said, you need to decide what you’ll be hunting and what type of hunter you want, flusher or pointer. Other decisions come down to coat, do you want a short hair or long hair. If you’re hunting thickets with briars and such, long hairs can be a chore after the hunt, GSPs...
I've shot a few chukar, but they came out of a cage and I did it in the name of bird dog training. Tasty buggers.
I'd like to give it a go on the real deal someday (I think).
Cool stuff, beautiful place neffa.
How's your dogs hunting drive? I've been hesitant to get a WPG over a GSP because of people saying their hunting style is really slow. From videos of them hunting, they don't seem that enthusiastic. Also, if you have it obedience trained, or trained to wing and shot, how was the training process...
With a puppy you can always try to wrap a rag with the scent of choice around his food bowl so every time he gets fed he correlates the two together or place it under the food bowl as well. Then start small drags as mentioned above and add length as he starts progressing with the same scent...
That sounds pretty good! What breeder did you get him from? Also, if you did obedience training or any other type of training (steady to wing and shot, water retrieve, trailing) what was his tolerance for training like? Did he not want to do repetitions? Was he hard headed at all or was he very...
Got out for the first time in a couple weeks. My (almost) 2 year old dog has made huge progress. He’s had zero chill, ripping bird etc. Today he held steady on 5 coveys (huns and chukar). Pointing way out on wild running birds and creeping in to relocate them etc. It takes a lot of patience...
My little Belle has hunted quail, pheasant and Hungarian partridge with equal success. Patience in training with repetition has payed dividends. She was started with pheasant wings as a puppy. Moved on to quail, wild quail, the following season. Ironically she has been hunted with pointers and...
Losing dogs is tough. My condolences to you and your wife.
As for designer breeds we’ve got a first generation Labradoodle. He’s a great companion dog, he’s always by someone in the house. Probably would have been an ok retriever, I kinda wasn’t that mad at em when I should have been...
Took mine in for his retest a few weeks ago. It was simply a repeat of the last test from his initial training - instructor held the dog while I went ~50 ft away with a rattler between us in a container. I called him to me and about 6 ft from the snake he jumps up and does an airborne 180 and...
I'd love to hear more about this! Was your dog enthusiastic about searching for non-game animals? I shy away from a drahthaar because of what people have been describing as always being on, but I feel that I'd need that to do as much work as I intend on doing. How is it with your family, and was...
