I'm on the same journey. With my in-line all I need is a bull elk (have killed a cow). Just started with my traditional BP and technically have killed a whitetail buck so far, even if I thought it was a doe when I killed it 😅.
If a person has killed a lot of them or looking for a particular buck it seems possible. May be a situation of multiple tags?
I used to hunt with a good friend from AZ who only filled his doe tag, or tags about half the time. If he shot a nice buck first thing, he rarely filled a doe tag.
I'm...
@Forkyfinder i can’t remember the years exactly but it was between 2010-2012 we had back to back bad winters. The better bucks were already gone by then but we had deer still before that point, from my perspective. That is around the time that Newburg came in as well, this had a big impact...
Apparently there are some other crazy’s that were willing to pay the special price for antelope and it didn’t drop enough.🤷♂️
My son drew a doe tag in 32, will have to see if we make the trip for a single doe tag.
I think we are very close. I am absolutely amazed that the ranchers in Sierra Valley, and parts of Colorado have not taken care of business, and called and said "come get your wolf."
It is becoming so challenging to get tags, in a lot of states, the whole idea has to change.
For example...
As a chronologically challenged pronghorn hunter, I'm not that horny anymore, so a doe is fine for me. Number one criteria is for an alfalfa fed antelope ... good eating!
Good luck out there, Chris. I know you will have fun.
We've had some great luck for the season so far. The 4th hunt was a success. I took my twins out on their either sex deer tags and they each scored their first deer.
We battled wet, cold, wind and fog, and did a lot of hiking, but they stuck with it until right before dark when the second twin...
I might not have explained it very well.
Eliminating public-land mule deer doe tags IS limiting opportunity, just not what most people think of because they all have dreams of a 200" buck on the wall and the associated bragging rights. A lot of places the general tag is antlered mule deer only...
Doesnt it seem like the population and harvest parallel?
I have a difficult time throwing the numbers out totally if the harvest tracks well with population numberw.
I've hunted antelope all my life in Montana and I'm 67 years old. I took my granddaughter out on Sunday and saw 0 antelope on public land in a 90 mile loop north of Ryegate, area 516-20. I wanted her to experience the thrill of the hunt but failed miserably.
Don't waste your time on Montaña...
Applicant after the winter of 2022: "I might just throw my doe tag away if I draw one, the Wyoming antelope herds are in bad shape. WGF should take a pause from doe tags."
Same applicant in 2024: "Our group drew 8 doe tags! Gonna be a meat haul back to (state of your choice) with these new Yeti...
Not so much alfalfa here or enough to make much a difference. Definitely corn and soybeans. Lots of acorns too. Everyone says corn fed deer is best but I've had them where natural browse was main food source and found those to actually be better.
Well, I made my loop and got above where those antelope disappeared to, but they were long gone, but I did enjoy the hike and a lot of this you can’t see from the road so I like having them picture in my head what the ground looks like, my truck is parked in those trees and those antelope were...
Treecarp spouting the NR whining already on this thread? FFS.
They'd fix the entirety of their problems tying prices to inflation or increasing them, talking about the R fees/prices. A doe antelope tag should cost more than a pack of nicotine.
