I use a MR Pintler often and have used the Metcalf a couple of times. Never had an issue yet but there is a first time for everything I suppose. If I am flying it is not for a hunt so no worries on cross pollination.

I am driving all the way from Louisiana next season and I will be focusing on whitetails. I mean if I see a big ole mule deer I will go after it, but I have a hunch I will be coming home without a mule deer.

Just go if you have the time and can swing it financially. You won’t regret it no matter if you take an animal or not.
You should learn enough to make it worthwhile regardless because you will be much more experienced for your next trip.
