Bird dog adoption
There two setter mixes up for adoption in Livingston, MT. I adopted one of their brothers 3 years ago. Mine is a mix of 8 pointers/setters. 33% Irish, 15% English and down the line to 2% Vizsla. Mine is 100% bird dog and a great family dog. I have nothing to gain from this, just throwing it out...- PatrickK

Montana Weather So Far
I think "normal" winters are about right for elk. Not so long or cold that there is significant winter kill with enough snow to keep the mountain green as long as possible. So far in the Gardiner/Livingston area we seem to be experiencing a fairly normal winter but with several months to go... -

Montana elk (mis)management
FWP numbers for 313 seemed a little off also. I am pulling these numbers from memory so I might be off a little bit but its pretty close. I strictly follow the times published by FWP for determining the legality of shooting hours. I have not taken shots that were within legal hours because of poor light but have never taken a shot before or after the published times even if I thought I had plenty of light. Took a Walk up a Mountain
I think the hair loss is from scabies. Its widespread although I wouldn't call it common. Its a problem going into winter because the hair loss leaves the animals more susceptible to colder temps. Patrick -

Gardner shutdown
I am pretty sure that the unit in question is 313 which is NOT the backcountry early rifle hunt. I think that the FWP bull to cow ratio cited above is probably pretty accurate. Any wolf killing?
I had a friend kill a wolf two years ago. He and his family received death threats for about a month. Seeing the strain on his wife and family I decided that I would spare my family the same. Any wolf killing?
I called at least 2 in while elk hunting near Gardiner, Montana. I didn't have a wolf tag so didn't take a shot but the closest one was 25-30 yards. These started howling when they figured out they had been fooled. Patrick- PatrickK

Those last 20 yards: Solo Elk
I have the same issue but I didn't call in as many bulls this year. I carry a heads up decoy that I can deploy in just a few seconds although I can't say that it has helped me much this year - I also can't say for sure that the bulls even saw my decoy so I don't know. Good on you for staying... -

Missing bow hunter MT
Hoping for the best but it doesn't look good. That is rugged country. My mind always jumps to bears but getting stabbed by a branch during a fall and bleeding out, breaking a leg, or even just having a heart attack/stroke are more likely than getting killed by a bear.
