    Montana Weather So Far

I think "normal" winters are about right for elk. Not so long or cold that there is significant winter kill with enough snow to keep the mountain green as long as possible. So far in the Gardiner/Livingston area we seem to be experiencing a fairly normal winter but with several months to go...

    Montana elk (mis)management

FWP numbers for 313 seemed a little off also. I am pulling these numbers from memory so I might be off a little bit but its pretty close. FWP says there are about 4000 elk in 313 including the section of northern range inside Yellowstone. They also say that there are about 2.2 or 2.7 bulls per...

    Sunrise/Sunset

I strictly follow the times published by FWP for determining the legality of shooting hours. I have not taken shots that were within legal hours because of poor light but have never taken a shot before or after the published times even if I thought I had plenty of light. Its not worth getting...

Took a Walk up a Mountain

I think the hair loss is from scabies. Its widespread although I wouldn't call it common. Its a problem going into winter because the hair loss leaves the animals more susceptible to colder temps. Patrick

    Gardner shutdown

I am pretty sure that the unit in question is 313 which is NOT the backcountry early rifle hunt. I think that the FWP bull to cow ratio cited above is probably pretty accurate. I spend most of the season in 313 and bulls with a brow tine are getting hard to find. I think the previous posts were...

    Any wolf killing?

I had a friend kill a wolf two years ago. He and his family received death threats for about a month. Seeing the strain on his wife and family I decided that I would spare my family the same. It may be that most of that is past. No one I am close with has killed a wolf since then so I don't...

    Any wolf killing?

I called at least 2 in while elk hunting near Gardiner, Montana. I didn't have a wolf tag so didn't take a shot but the closest one was 25-30 yards. These started howling when they figured out they had been fooled. Patrick

Those last 20 yards: Solo Elk

I have the same issue but I didn't call in as many bulls this year. I carry a heads up decoy that I can deploy in just a few seconds although I can't say that it has helped me much this year - I also can't say for sure that the bulls even saw my decoy so I don't know. Good on you for staying...

    Missing bow hunter MT

Hoping for the best but it doesn't look good. That is rugged country. My mind always jumps to bears but getting stabbed by a branch during a fall and bleeding out, breaking a leg, or even just having a heart attack/stroke are more likely than getting killed by a bear. At least that is what I...

MT HD 316 anybody been there lately?

I have spent some time in 316 in August fishing the last few years. I have not seen one deer or elk and the only bears I have seen were grizzly bears. Three of my friends have hunted the early rifle wilderness hunt for elk. They all had a great time but they all failed to see many animals...

    Bow Stave

Hickory and Osage are your best bets although you can make a bow of nearly anything if its designed correctly. I have made a bunch of self bows, sinew backed bows, and a few bows backed with hickory. Your not asking for help with that stave but I will add my two cents anyway. If the check runs...

    BLM boundry question.

I think you should hunt wherever its public, if you want. The BLM saying its your responsibility to prove your innocence if questioned doesn't seem right. It seems like they should have to prove you guilty and you would be presumed innocent until then. Patrick

    Hunting with the crowds

It seems like the crowds usually disperse after opening weekend. A lot of guys don't hunt during the middle of the day either which is the time I have most of my encounters with elk. Patrick

Colorado Harvest Numbers (Methods of Calculations)

I am always suspect of harvest data. Some states have some form of harvest survey but the data still relays on honesty and accuracy of the people filling out the survey. Patrick
