    private pond

As some have said, check with your DNR or Ag Extension Service for recommended ratios. My grandfather, many years ago, built a 1.5 acre pond, about 10 feet deep in the center, with a soft bottom - sounds about like your setup, to use to water cattle. My dad and I have maintained it, and now...

    Trichinosis & bear meat.

You are correct. Steve and some of his crew contracted Trichinosis from a black bear they ate in the field in the episode with Roark Denver. Steve said it started to rain pretty hard before the bear meet was cooked enough to kill Trichinosis. Doesn't actually require that high of an internal...

    Packers Seahawks

True, but as I was explaining to my daughters, it is better than it used to be. Don't want to go back to the days when the team that got the OT kickoff worked just enough to get the ball inside the 30, centered it, then kicked a field goal. At least now there is some incentive to get a TD.

    any smokers out there?

I like to take a venison rump roast and cover with bacon. That helps to keep the meat moist, and, let's be real: Who doesn't like bacon?

    The trouble with jerky...

I don't have a dehydrator either. This sounds crazy, and a little redneck (not sure if they have those in the UK :) but it works: I marinade for about 24 hours in: soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, Siracha, onion powder, garlic powder, brown sugar and crushed red pepper flakes. Obviously the...

    The trouble with jerky...

I just made a bunch over the weekend, and my daughter and my nephew (and their friends) have already taken care of a bunch of it. I'll probably make some more this weekend (it's gun season and I'm tagged out), and I'll hide it in the closet where the cleaning supplies are kept. They'll never...

    Venison Chili (no bean)

Looks good. I like beans in my chili, and in fact I use 2 different kinds: 2 lbs ground venison (or 50/50 ground venison and ground beef) 1 onion, chopped 2 cans diced tomatoes 1 can diced tomatoes with green chiles 1 can black beans 1 can kidney beans 1/4 cup chili powder 1 small can tomato...

    Muzzle brakes

Never felt the need for a brake on my .308 or my 30-06. I went to the range with a buddy who had a brake on his .308 AR. He shot at the space next to me, and I think it rattled my teeth. There is also a member at my club who has a sporterized Moisin (7.62x54R) with a brake. You can feel that...

    Where to retire...

One thing I know for certain: DO NOT retire to Illinois! I am looking to get out of here at the earliest opportunity. I had thought about Texas, but there is a depressing lack of public land access. Now I am leaning toward Wyoming. Colorado is a solid choice, but I don't like how the...

    3 rifle battery

These are what I have: AR-15 in .223 Howa 1500 in .308 Rossi Wizard in 30-06 If we can only have 3, when I inherit my dad's .243, I will have to get rid of one of the 30 cals. Don't know which, though - they each have their merits.

New shooter; right handed, left eye dominant . . .

My older daughter and my wife are both right handed and left eye dominant -my daughter to the point that she can't really close her left eye while keeping the right open. My daughter actually shoots better from the left (both rifle and bow) than from the right. My wife doesn't have much interest...

    .308 load

OK. I've been working on a load for my Howa 308 using 165 gr Sierra Game Kings and IMR 4064. I started at 42 gr. and worked up in .5 gr increments to 43.5, which the Sierra manual lists as the max load for that powder and bullet combo. They didn't group for crap. Talking like a 2.5 inch group...

    Newbie meat care question

I have a 14 cubic foot chest freeser. I have not killed an elk yet, but that freezer can hold a half of beef (@330 lbs); half a hog (@110 lbs) and 2 whitetails, at the same time. Not much room left when all that is in there, but it will fit.

    Reloading question

I use a 165 gr. Sierra Jacketed Soft Point, over 43 gr. of IMR 4064. Has worked pretty well out of my Howa. I have wondered about the need to step up to a 180 gr. bullet for elk? Can't hunt deer with a rifle here, so no need for a dual purpose load (and I mostly bow hunt for deer anyway), but...
