Colorado OTC 2nd Rifle or Montana General Elk

I live in Montana and have hunted Colorado before, the biggest issue you might have, is if you can draw a tag here. The last two years they've "sold" out the non resident tags, and with Colorado, you can just show up and buy one at any Walmart. So you have to take into consideration of that...

Big jump in MT harvest numbers, 2016 to 2017. What's up?

A lot has to do with the snow levels, if we get quite a bit of early snow like 2017, the elk are pushed down lower and more of them get shot. Now for this last season, we didn't get enough snow to push them down and even though we had way more hunters in this area than normal, the kill was down...

    Montana elevation for early September

Ignore the elevation aspect, I've seen them from above tree lines to the bottom of the valleys, and everywhere in between.

    Enclosed vs. Utility

When I get a chance, I'll take some pictures of how I have mine set up now. It's a work in process though, been buying all sorts of stuff for it, I'm going to run power inside it and power it with a generator, plus a window in the door and a few other things that I've come up with over the last...

    Enclosed vs. Utility

I own both, and use my enclosed for hunting, and I actually insulated my trailer for camping in it, built beds and a counter for preparing food and whatnot.

    Cross Country rigs

When I had my suburban, to me, that was the best cross country vehicle. Plenty of room to stretch out in, enough room with the third row removed to sleep in. Plus all of our gear was inside with us. I also pulled my "redneck" camper too, all that is, is a 7'x14' enclosed trailer built into a...

    Ford Van Advice

You'd be fine, as long as it doesn't rain or snow. Here in Montana, most back roads, when wet, even with 4x4, it is an experience driving on them. The mud just seems to pack up on the tires, and as for the snow, where I go most times, the snow is bumper deep at times and at times I have to throw...

MT early Nov COW elk tactics

The elk in my area have been silent and most of them have moved to private land since the invasion of the orange army. As for tactics, I just spot and stalk them mostly, but the last week or so has been disappointing, as most elk I've seen are on private that's closed to hunting.

    Recommended over the counter Unit

Montana is and isn't an OTC tag, they have 17,000 tags that they offer to non residents. So yes they do have the otc, but it's capped at how many they sell. As for the thought of getting away from everyone, well that would depend on if you're hunting with bow or gun. Bow season is less...

    Opening Day Anxiety, just me?

I'm like a kid on Christmas eve for the archery opener...but come opening day of general season, it's like ok, time to grab the rifle and get the tags not filled, filled. The reason for my feeling like this, is because I've already been hunting and putting miles on since the middle of August and...

    Big Sky Total Archery Challenge?

It's a fun time, went last year and my boy and I decided to do it again this year. I was fortunate enough to get tickets for all three days, kind of sucks they had to go to "tee" times, but I understand the reason why.

    Enclosed Trailer Conversion

I didn't use spray foam, but I have 2" of foil faced foam board in the ceiling and 1.5" in the walls and used spray foam for all gaps and between the edges of each foam board. I have a buddy who used the spray foam it works awesome...but it's almost too airtight.

    Enclosed Trailer Conversion

I have a 7'x14' that I converted into a redneck camper, I pull it up into the mountains every year multiple times and I have no issues with ground clearance, and only one time turning around at night, but that was my fault cause it was dark and I was by myself and couldn't see and backed my...

    Elk habitat?

I agree with this, I went to Colorado elk hunting once and did the same thing. According to the maps and google earth, it seemed hilly, but once I was there...holy crap. Took me an hour to go 100 yards...So make sure you have plan A, B, and possibly C ready to go. As for the success rates go...
