Hi All,

I am planning an elk hunt for next fall, but have never hunted WY before. I am a non resident with no preference points. From what I'm understanding odds of being drawn for these units is almost 100% even for non residents? I know they don't have any OTC tags available for non residents but I would like to bank on being drawn and if not, then go to MT for an OTC tag. I'm looking for someone whose a little more familiar with this than I am. Any Non residents hunt WY yearly? Is unit 56 any good? Any tips are greatly appreciated!

Welcome to HT! You definitely need to check out Wyoming's hunt planner, as it will give you all the necessary info for each unit.

I don't know 56, but I think most of it is wilderness (which means as a NR you will need to go with an outfitter) or private/BLM. I think there is also a mix of limited quota and general tags available for that unit, so it really depends on which one you are looking at. Regardless, with no points you will have a very small chance of drawing.

Thanks for the responses. On my onx maps it's showing wilderness about 5 miles back from the road. Not sure what that's about but I was thinking if it's not wilderness then I could hunt it. Either way I think I'll switch plans and go the Montana route. I have some family there but they don't hunt much. Back to the drawing board, I'll just start building points in WY and go for an otc general season tag in MT. I've only ever hunted Idaho for elk. We hunted the selway Bitterroot just across the border by Hamilton! I'm thinking south western Montana for this hunt. I'll have to look into the seasons and tags available in that area!

Wyoming is a great state for elk.
But you are best off building points for 3-5 years. Then you have a realistic chance at several different tags.
