I have a cow tag for Elk area 39 in Wyoming and just received my Brucellosis sample kit. First time I've received one of these. If I manage to kill a cow, any suggestions on how to gather a usable sample? Didn't know if pointing the cow downhill and cutting the neck artery would work, or what methods others have found to get the sample. Sounds like many of the samples the WGF receives are unusable and I'm not sure what would constitute an unusable sample.

Thanks

The blood can come from any source on the animal just get it quickly. Even chest cavity blood can be used. The jugular or femoral works well since the femoral will be severed when quartering. Keep the vial cool but not frozen. The blood can not be tested if frozen. If you get a chance drop it off at a Regional office instead of mailing it. There will be plenty of blood in the animal after the harvest, they have large cardiovascular systems.
