Amboseli park, at the foot of Kilimanjaro, was the home of “Craig”, a much beloved elephant. Estimated to be at least 54 years old, he was thought to be the bearer of the largest set of tusks in all of Africa. Natural causes were listed as the cause of his passing.

Another photographers work with this elephant:

David Yarrow (well known photographer) says this portrait of this animal is his all time favorite

I wonder if these names were given to the elephants from researchers that were studying how low frequency rumbling could be perceived over very long distances.

Each family group (mothers and their offspring) was designated alphabetically, so that you had an “A” group with names all starting with “A” eg: Alice, Anna, Annabell, Andrew and Aaron etc.

Craig and his twin sister both having “C” names makes me wonder if they were in thise family groups way back when.

One of my father’s close Kenyan friend and professional hunter was an elephant and Cape buffalo specialist. On some days his tracker would announce that it was no use going hunting elephants, as there were none in their hunting area. I’ve always wondered if this tracker, who like many trackers had walked on the wrong side of the law before getting caught poaching and going straight, were feeling the lack of low frequency rumblings in the chest and/or bare feet, and deciding that there were no elephants in the general vicinity.

I haven’t been around wild elephants since this low frequency means of communication has been discovered by science, but I have been around captive elephants and seen the ear posturing and felt my chest vibrating if I was super still.
