Hi all, I currently have an older WPG. Have hunted upland birds with him. When he was younger I sent him off to a trainer for a month. He’s hunted well for me. We just got another WPG pup. I would like to do more of the training for this one. Does anyone have a book or resource they recommend for training pointing dogs. I’ve trained labs before but the WPG are a different deal in many respects. I appreciate the input.

For your force fetch:

Look into clicker training for your obedience.

These have worked well for me.

Clicker training worked really well for us for basic obedience work.

Hope it’s ok to revive this thread but I am getting a WPG pup beginning of next year and I am considering having the breeder (who also does training AND NAVHDA) keep the pup for the first 3 months for foundational training. Curious if you all think this is a good idea or wait till the pup is older and do training then or do both young and older trainings. Thanks!

8 week old pup? I’d wait. I’d take the pup home and let it bond with you. You can work on here, heel and maybe whoa. Let it grow up and experience life a little before formal training.

If you have time, I’d recommend joining the local NAHVDA and training with the group.

When I got my old dog in 2016, I made arrangements with the breeder to keep him until 12 weeks. They’re located in Wisconsin and my dad and I were returning home to Pennsylvania from Colorado, so we were able to swing by and pick him up. It was money well spent. In my amateur opinion, it can’t hurt for a pup to spend additional time with its mother. Just my limited experience.

Also, I’ll second what brymoore said about letting the pup grow up and experience life. And NAVHDA! It has been the best thing for me and my dogs.
