Winter water source

Might be a silly question, but one that I was pondering yesterday as I sat 3500 feet above seemingly any water source. Do elk rely on snow as a substitute for the liquid variety once things freeze up?

I know horses and cattle will if they have to. I can only assume the same is true for deer and elk.

They'll find open water. Even up here in AK you can find open water in sub zero temps.

They can't get enough water from snow to sustain themselves for very long. Same with cows and horses. If you didn't water your animals in the winter they'd be dead, even with snow...

I have seen horses walk up to frozen creeks and stomp on the ice until they break through to drink.
