Iowa and trout are not synonymous. But in extreme Northeast Iowa an area known as the Driftless area because it was unglaciated during the last Ice Age has cold water springfed streams that support trout. Brook trout are native to Iowa but had not been found naturally reproducing for nearly 100 years because of poor conditions in the streams. After much hard work and cooperation from landowners and public agencies there are naturally reproducing brook trout in a few streams in Northeast Iowa. I was lucky enough to go out and sample some of those streams helping the Iowa DNR fisheries biologist to collect roe from females and sperm from males to help rear native strain Brookies. There have been trout in the stream we sampled wild and naturally reproducing since 2002. Many year classes were w in this sampling.
