who actually knows how to use a map and compass

I acquired an extra compass and protractor from uncle Sam. I do get a FS map of the unit ill be hunting and keep the map and my protractor in my pack lid. I keep my compass in my pack belt pocket and don't really use it to navigate but I will pull it out and shoot a reverse azimuth to known locations if I'm getting out there just in case I get turned around, batteries die and I need to get back. I've never had to use it while hunting.

I was pretty decent at land nav while I was in and helped give refresher courses to my unit every year. I do think it is a useful skill and it would behoove one to be competent especially if they spend a lot of time exploring outdoors. A compass can work to let someone know which way they are headed but without the paper map you will not be able to tell where you are if you get yourself that lost. Map, compass, and protractor.

Gps and tracking pretty much make all of this obsolete, as long as the batteries work.
