Vertical shaft lawn mower engine for Go Kart?

So I have 2 push mowers... One is a 6.75hp craftsman that I am going to sell - OR if it is possible convert the vertical shaft to run the horizontal axle of a go-kart.
I weld for fun... (mainly box and collapsible camp stoves) though the engine aspect it seems all I have reviewed via internet say - DON'T DO IT... (major problems and hell of a lot of headache vs simply buying a horizontal shaft motor and the few that say it can be done EASILY want $$$ to explain how it can be done...

So anyone mess with this type of stuff before...?

I messed with small engines a lot in high school doing all kinds of off the wall things. We never did come up with a good way of doing what your talking about, we did get it to work with doing a 90* turn with v-belts, but they never lasted long and that's assuming that they stayed of the pulleys.
