Velvet Elk, Sept 1-10

Just curious as to if anyone sees elk that are still in velvet those first 10 days of September? I've never hunted this early and wondering what the chances are... in New Mexico that is.

You won't see a mature bull in velvet that late. You might find a raghorn, or more likely a spike, that hasn't rubbed. They'll start rubbing this week around here.

I suppose NM might be later....I'm not familiar.

I found a ridge yesterday up here in Montana that has recently been getting quite a bit of attention from a big bull.

Oak is dead on the money....Yesterday, my daughter and I watched a bachelor group with two 5x5's which had velvet hanging and bright pink antlers glowing. 5 smaller bulls in the group had velvet intact.
