Planning my first backpack bowhunt in the Trinity Alps this August. Never hunted blacktail, I moved west from Vermont for my current job. I am a whitetail hunter. Took my first mule deer this past bow season here in SoCal. I have purchased several maps and spent hours on Google Earth, planning a scouting trip in June or July. Any tips or tactics would be greatly appreciated.

Be prepared for heat.....its going to be hot. The northern end of the alps is a little more forgiving as far as terrain. The deer will be up high. Send me a PM if you want more details.

It will probably be hot, but I have seen it snow up there the first week of Sept. Not usually, but it can. B zone you can hunt archery, then go back for rifle which open up the middle of Sept. You can get 2 buck tags OTC. Hunt as high as you possibly can. Up around 7-8000 ft. Remember, you will be parking at 3-4000. So its a hell of a hike. Also, get a bear tag. I always saw more black bears than deer back there. Big ones too. The deer seem to migrate East out of the high country and winter NE of Trinity Lake. The best time to hunt is when storms push deer out of the high country and they start migrating. The last two years I lived in CA, the migration happend after rifle season ended though. Also, watch for snakes. I cant believe how many I saw all the way up to 6k. Good luck!
