Anyone ever buy travel/trip insurance for a hunt? I see a couple of companies offer it. It’s about 5-7% of the estimated cost. I’m just looking to cover for unexpected health issues that would cause a last minute cancellation. Thanks.

I had insurance for my 2024 Canada moose hunt and will have it for my 2026 Canada moose hunt. Big consideration is to cover costs of an emergency extraction event. Last minute cancellation due to health issues was secondary for me.

The extraction stuff seems pretty common. Not worried too much about that. Mostly the travel and guide cost. I remember I bought some for an Alaska fishing trip 7-8yrs ago. Just curious if anything changed after the Covid experience. Costs certainly seem higher, but that isn’t a surprise.

My first trip was essentially after the COVID stuff so I can't comment on that aspect. Costs are dependent on your age, overall trip cost (or the portion you want to cover), and strangely enough, where you reside in the US. Maybe that is to reflect potential extraction costs. Also depends on what added benefits to want to include. Extraction/rescue and guide costs are mostly what I care about. Travel up and back is just driving for me so no airfare costs outside getting into/out of the bush really apply in my situation. I don't need to insure hotel stays, etc.

I looked into it last year before going to Greenland. Seemed pretty pricey, and I'd have to have a pretty serious health issue to not go on a planned hunt. For me, a health issue with aging parents would be more likely and not covered anyway. I always get refundable airfare and call it good.

Many outfitters’ hunt contracts in extremely remote locations REQUIRE the purchase of Evacuation Insurance with Riders for Civil Unrest and High Altitude Evacuation before departing from the States. This evacuation insurance is different and separate from basic travel insurance.

I have had to buy the evacuation insurance for hunts in Cameroon and Nepal. It’s not awfully expensive when considering the overall price and cost of these excursions in such remote locations.

I gambled and never bought the Travel Insurance or the Evacuation Insurance for the Mexico hunts.
