Trapping Thread 2025/2026

I’ll let them tag it if they are actively out with me helping check the traps. Otherwise, I tag it.

In MN a licensed trapper can check/tend traps for another licensed trapper. Both of my kids have lifetime licenses and have their otter tags. They also have to make the trip to register their otters in person with me.
Interesting. It’s similar here but they have to set their own. Otherwise you get one guy using grandma, uncle Bob, and all the cousins tags. It’s abused here.

I strongly suspect it’s abused here as well. But, I can’t control what others do, only what I do. If my kids want to join me, I’ll let them tag some critters. When they are old enough, they’ll also set their own traps. But, I’m not letting my 6 year old get close to a 330, or go in open water when the air temp is -17F.

I understand that. They make me pucker up too

Got a few cats sets out finally yesterday afternoon. Went back in today to get a few more out and found this waiting for me. Blue Christmas tinsel was its kryptonite. Followed its tracks in the snow and it was walking about 100 yards away. Once it came into view of the tinsel it turned 90 degrees and came right for it. Made an exposed walk through beside the cedar tree knowing cats would circle it. Worked to perfection. Skinned out without stretching cat is 43” from tip of nose to base of tail.

Youngest wants to trap coyotes. (Hes 5 so ill have to trap and hes going to boss me around)I admittedly have never trapped coyotes before. Won't happen this year, but ive got the most time to dedicate tk it around Christmas/New Years after the ground is already frozen more than likely. And we cant legally run snares here. Do any of you guys have any experience using sand for when the ground is froze? Or is it a pia? Thanks.

Waxed dirt is probably a better option. I believe coyotes are born already guilty of something so they are extremely cautious all the time. I think a pile of sand would put them on edge even more if it seems out of place .

Idk why I said sand. Waxed dirt is what I meant.

That’s what I use. I make it in the summer. Throw some sifted dirt on a black tarp in the sun and let it dry. Once dirt gets good and dry and hot throw the wax flakes on top and let it melt in. Once melted mix it up and let it cool
