[Ridge Runner]

American explorer and adventurer Zebulon Montgomery Pike was born on this day in 1779. After proving himself in the United States Army,Pike was ordered to explore the northern waters of the Mississippi River in 1805 and the Red and Arkansas Rivers in 1806. On this latter expedition, Pike attempted to climb a mountain, which would later be named Pike's Peak. He then headed south into Spanish territory in what is now New Mexico, where all of the information he had compiled during his travels was confiscated by the Spanish authorities.
