Since it's 3pm and basically dark outside my house right now I had a though about rut triggers for animals. If one of the core fundamental of the rut starting is total daylight hours, how does fire and the darkness associated with it play a role?

The blacktail rut here usually gets going in early October so we aren't months away from the normal start. If this were to last a week or so, could it have an impact?

Interesting thought, I would think the animals can tell the difference, but maybe not. It will be interesting to here from someone that knows more about animal behavior.

Since we don’t completely understand how the pineal gland and light stimulation works in humans, I suspect the whole subject is much more complicated than we even imagine. Who can say whether it’s visible light that even drives the process in the first place? Animal vision and sensory abilities are much more sensitive than ours in many ways. Regardless, I don’t think these conditions will last long enough (or at least I hope they don’t) to completely throw off their cycles. I doubt you’ll see any discernible difference in timing of rut over any other year.
