Thirteen Yards in One Second: Why You Can Never Outrun a Charging Bear

Ouch. A good reminder to carry spray in a chest pack. Though I have to admit, I am jealous of those scars.

Rinella talks about he used to kind of wish he had a close encounter with a grizzly just to have the cool scars. After they had their close call he's totally changed his tune.

Ouch.

That is a graphic example of how much damage a bear can do without really trying. I try to be very bear aware, but there are always lapses in one's alertness.

I like to think that since much of my time in bear country, I'm on a horse, that the odds are more favorable. They have alerted me to bears more than once. When their head comes up and their ears point forward,,,you had better believe there is something ahead that has gotten their attention.

Amazing how much damage they do. Odd that the writer had to title it '13 Yards Out', when the victim said the bear was "within 15 feet" when he first saw it, does that make it a better story?

The title is referring to a different story the writer experienced with a charging bear.

Not even enough time to shoot/spray your partner!

Guess it's back to bacon grease rubbed into his/her boots...
