Things we take for granted

Funny this thread caught my eye this morning. Yesterday, I was driving my three young kids to daycare when my oldest (8) asks me "Dad, why is America the best country?"

I sat and thought for a couple seconds and started rattling off some things "your parents both have good jobs, we have a nice home, we live in a safe area, you go to a nice school, we get to see our friends and family a lot, we can walk to church, etc"

I had a weird feeling hit me as I was thinking of all these things that make me appreciate where I get to live. Those are all things I take for granted pretty often. Just a part of our daily lives. I think the timing was perfect as we approach July 4, 2026. I will probably spend a lot more time the next two days with friends and family reminding myself how lucky I am. More moments of gratitude that bring big smiles as my kids swim in the lake, fry walleye in a friends backyard, and light off fireworks.

Whenever my kids tell me they're starving I tell them you dont even know what that is; hell you barely know what be hungry is.
That reminds me of when I was a teenager in the 90's. Brother and I would come home and say "what's to eat, I'm starving".
Dad would let us know "you might be hungry but your not starving". My dad was stationed in Ethiopia while his brother was serving in Vietnam. Starvation was real in Africa. Any of the soldiers that got in trouble it was their duty to go collect the bodies of the deceased in the area, many were children that had starved to death. So yeah.....

My kids still think I’m bs’ing when I mention having a pound of fried hamburger and katsup for dinner, for a family of 6. Other times it was a pot of those big red kidney beans.

4x4 that works. No more muddy boots to turn hubs.
Can't imagine the ride to town for supplies when the homesteader family that was here building a life. 16 miles of buckboard or model T could be a week in bad weather and mud.
