FWP And Partners Release Bighorn Sheep In Tendoy Mountains | Montana FWP

Staff from Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and partnering organizations recently released 26 bighorn sheep into the Tendoy Mountains as part of a new effort to re-establish a wild sheep herd there.

The herd was down in the Big Sheep Canyon on Sunday...1 ram and 1 ewe for sure had collars

It'll be nice to see them regularly again. I really hope they can keep some distance between themselves and the local domestic sheep.

Great news! I didn’t realize they were going to release more sheep there after killing them all off a few years ago.

Great news! I didn’t realize they were going to release more sheep there after killing them all off a few years ago.

That was the plan all along. Remove all the bighorns and give the area a rest. Then do a transplant. They are trying something new. Cross your fingers and hope it works.

A second transplant in the Tendoys is scheduled for next winter. Don't know if they plan to capture more Wild Horse Island sheep or capture bighorns from another herd. Maybe that question will be addressed Saturday evening?
