My daughter and I have been working on a stitch and glue canoe project for the last week. It's a fun project we are hoping to get the lions share done before the weekend is over. We start stitching tonight after dinner. This what we have so far:

SWEET! Ambitious you are...... and what a fun project. Im not canoe person but sounds like a fun project.

It's a lot slower going than I anticipated, but I have never really worked with wood before and she hasn't done anything like this at all. I will say she has been a trooper when it comes to the work portion. She spent a whole day with me planning and sanding the pieces. We lost a day to bad epoxy mixing. My fault, misread the instructions. We were able to salvage the work though.

That's excellent. I spent a summer (Memorial Day to Labor Day) building a small sail boat with my dad back in 2001. It was a lot of fun. Great project.

I wish there was a convenient place around here to keep and use a sail boat. That would be my next project.

The stitching is starting to get close. It's pretty crazy how it looks when the stitches are loose. I was sick that we messed all the cuts up and it was going to be a mess. The tighter we get all the seems the cleaner the lines get and the better it looks. A few more hours of tweaking and we will begin the glue process.

Looks good. We don't use the sailboat much. It fell off the trailer enroute to a lake and it took us a few years to fond the time to fix all the damage, but we got it back in the water last summer. Plus the fixing gave my dad and me some more quality project time.

My grandfather did a cedar strip canoe several years ago like that. His was an 8 foot boat. It was the inspiration for this build, and I hope to one day do one like that.

Well no more pics to share yet. Its been a long week. We started sanding down some of the epoxy we laid in and found several spots where the fiberglass didn't bond due to poor workmanship. I spent my evenings this week sanding it down and we will be getting back after it this weekend. If I didn't learn the hard way, I probably wouldn't learn. As with every project, this is taking twice the time planned and the budget is a joke we won't tell the wife. Still having fun.

This weekend we re-glassed the interior of the hull and got the center spreader and breasthooks in. Planning to do the inwhales tonight and some sculpting around the breasthooks with thickened epoxy. We have gone through a lot more epoxy than I though due to some of the re-work we had to do, ordered some more but it will take a week to arrive. I couldn't find anything at the hardware store that seemed to be good for boat building. Looks like we may have a few days off while we wait. As always Layla is working hard and staying positive even when we run into issues. I am very proud of her.

More progress. We got the inwhales installed and flipper her over to start on the outside of the hull. Exterior seems filled in with thickened epoxy, got the hull sanded down and put a base layer of epoxy on. The extra epoxy is supposed to arrive tomorrow so we can get the outer hull glassed then. starting to feel like we are on the downhill side. Outwhales, bilge runners, and a fair bit of sanding left after the glass. Then paint. hoping to maybe be in the water first weekend in August.
