The conventional approach to retrievers is to get them super exciting about retrieving, allowing them to break,
then later, perhaps at 6 months, work on steady.
With good breeding, there is plenty of retrieving desire in the genes.
With the last 2 pups, I teach them steady to retrieve from their very first retrieve.
I prefer this approach rather than changing the rules later on.
Retrieving can be exciting to pup and pup can still be steady.
