The conventional approach to retrievers is to get them super exciting about retrieving, allowing them to break,
then later, perhaps at 6 months, work on steady.
With good breeding, there is plenty of retrieving desire in the genes.

With the last 2 pups, I teach them steady to retrieve from their very first retrieve.
I prefer this approach rather than changing the rules later on.
Retrieving can be exciting to pup and pup can still be steady.

My dog is starry during training, nutso much with the real thing. She is getting a little better as time goes on though.
