Poked around on google and didn't get a totally straight answer anywhere.

Looking for some advice on....

  1. States where snaring (using a basic wire snare / running a snare line) is legal
  2. Any states where snaring is more of a free-for-all (eg in Michigan snares are only permitted for beavers)
  3. Specifically - looking for places where snaring would be legal for small game (rabbits, squirrels), western states are preferred b/c I'm located in CO and allowed on public land since I don't yet know a cowboy with 10000 acres that would let me 'screw around'.
Thanks!

Now that #tagweek is through any advice here? I did a deep dive into WY / MT / UT and they all require a 300lb release device on a snare thus making it more complicated than a wire/survival snare line.

Those type of snares are going to be illegal in most places these days. Also, some states don’t allow snaring at all as a legal method of take for small game. I don’t think there’s a simple answer to your question.

I’ve done a bit for furbearers. The few of states I have experience with all require breakaways on snares, fwiw. Too much publicity and risk for non-targets and pets.
