Smart phones & hunt talk

I'm a "newb" when it comes to these "smart-er than I " smart phones. Any tech savvy gurus /experienced handlers able to give some tips?
example of one common issue I run into : touching in the search box to detail what I am searching for ... it does not enable the touch keypad ... it shows it briefly then reverts back to the general screen to touch the area to input my search interest. - again... wash, rinse repeat...
it is certainly cool to take great pics/hd video... navigation, post on forums, etc...
anyhow, anyone know how to use the search ability here with smart phones?
