Concerning: SB 1171
With the following comments:
We represent the Deer Hunters of Idaho (DHI). DHI is a group of
sportsmen incorporated in Idaho and dedicated to preserving and
enhancing our deer herds and to encourage and help our youth to become
involved in the sport of hunting.
We are concerned about the current proposal to change the way the
depredation fund is managed. The impacts to the fund itself and to other
programs do not appear to us to be the right thing to do. We consider
the following to be unacceptable, detrimental and not in the best
interests of the hunting public nor of hunting itself.
o The potential of removing authority for claims processing from the
F&G department and giving it to the controllers office.
o Eliminates interest funding for habitat development, acquisition, and
funding for Mule Deer habitat projects
o Reduces interest funding for sportsman access programs (Access
Yes!).
o Reduces funds available for other Department programs
o Potentially limits hunting as a primary tool for resolving
depredations
We ask you to reconsider your support of this bill and support the
sportsmen of Idaho, your own Fish & Game department, the deer herds of
Idaho, and the sport of hunting. This bill does none of the above.

Thank you for your email. Unfortunately, we do not agree.
This bill is wildly misunderstood. The bill will not move money away
from sportsmen programs. It was bought to me by sportsmen who are
interested in restoring our big game herds.
I recognize that this would be a change, but I remind you it is a
change of a law created by the legislature. The legislature has the
role of weighing the wants and desires of all sportsmen, not just those
who are organized.
I fail to see the biology argument. The department acknowledges that
predators are effecting are hunting population, and has an official
position on reducing predators even though there are individuals within
the department who disagree.
Thanks for your concern for Idaho's wildlife.

So am I to understand that the official position of the department of Fish & Game is that they support this bill?
Also, the only sportsman's group that I know of who support this bill are the Sportsmen for Fish & Wildlife group. They are hardly representative of all the sportsmen in Idaho. what about SCI, RMEF, and others.
There is a Sportsman's Advisory group being formed and I know most of them are opposed to it.
If you don't mind I will circulate your response to these other groups. Maybe they will also contact you with their opinion.
