I'm using a Ruger American in 30-06 this year. Overall, I'm impressed with its accuracy, for the money. At 100 yards i could cover three shots with my thumb, using factory loads. I'm not in love with the trigger, however. I haven't weighed it, but it feels a good bit heavier than I'm used to. What's the best way to check the trigger weight? Do I need to send it to a smith to get it closer to three pounds? Any experiences with this?

I have many Ruger American and the triggers are supposed to be adjustable from 3-5lbs. I put one of these
In my competition 5.56 ranch and its around 2lbs. And no you don’t need a gunsmith to do it. It’s a 10min job.

And trigger scales are about $25.

No need for smith just get a trigger scale. Use the link Sheltowee gave or search.

My wife’s Rugar American trigger adjusted pretty easily. For a inexpensive rifle the trigger was crisp and works well. If uncomfortable tough can ask a smith to adjust.

This will fix your problems.
