I purchased a brand new Ruger American Gen 2 chambered in .300 win mag. The minute I brought the rifle home, I took the bolt out of the rifle and sent it out to LRI, to get the bolt spiral fluted so it matched the barrel. I was very surprised when I got a phone call and they said “Do you know your bolt has a crack in it?”. Look on the extractor lug, left side. It’s slightly bent outward and has a visible crack. Insane something like this snuck past QC eyes. Glad I hadn’t shot it yet! After receiving the bolt back I contacted Ruger and they had me ship the whole rifle out to customer service. A week later I got an email saying the rifle had been repaired and is out for shipment to be delivered in a few days. Talk about luck, in buying a new rifle that had this bad of a factory defect. And in not shooting the rifle yet. Pretty wild huh?

it was test fired before it left the factory, eh?
I think they’re mandated to use proof loads to test the safety, then regular ammo to make sure it functions properly. Could have been that process that caused the crack, and if it passed that I can understand overlooking this. Still, pretty bad, but it’s good that Ruger made it right

That could have been a very bad day for you. Like nhenry said, it's good that they made it right. Companies that do that are getting harder and harder to find nowadays.

Typical Ruger QC. They let their customers do their QC. Ruger tends to be pretty good at problem resolution. I suspect it's because they get a lot of experience.

I am a little surprised that you could open and close the bolt with the nose of the lug bent out like that. That just speaks to the tolerances allowed in the Ruger actions. I usually only allow .010" over bolt head diameter in the chambers I ream and that looks like it would not have closed without standing on the bolt handle.
