Hey Guys,

For those of you who like to shoot your rifle a lot, and at long range, what do you use for a target system.

Here's the situation. I'm looking for something that I can set up and shoot at long range, 500-1000 yds. I'd like something that I could keep shooting and not have to go and check every shot. It has to be sturdy so the damn wind doesn't blow it over or a bullet hit moves it off target. With that, I'd also like to know that the target is being hit and also be able to see my shots when I go and check it.

What works for you?

See video...

There is a bit easier way to do it... Don't worry about welding a steel piece to the bolt. If you get a scrap plate have a 1/2" Hole drilled in the center, and buy a pile of 7/16" or 1/2" Bolts and a pile of locking nuts (just make sure that the bolts fit before heading out). Instead of Conveyor belting, you can also use truck tire intertubes. If you hit the head of the bolt, the target will fall down, replace bolt and keep shooting.

I find that White is the best color to spray a target to see impacts at long ranges. I find that with a good spotting scope you can see hits on white out to about 1500yds.

If you don't have a good source for salvage steel, get in toucn with Action Targets... They have portable targets with stands, or you can buy target heads. They use AR500 or AR550 steel and are rated for basically anything non armor piercing at 100yds for rifles.

I'd like to get a gong setup myself. Currently use real estate sign yard frames with cardboard, printer paper and orange dots or spray paint. Can see holes at 500 or so depending on mirage with a spotter, past that we shoot groups then drive out to check/retrieve. The painted gong gives instant feedback and easy to see hits.

Gong. Makes seeing hits at very long ranges easy because the paint blows off in about a 1" circle.

Gongs all the way. I have a PVC pipe creation for sighting in, and then gongs is all I shoot. Very easy to make a portable stand with about 4' of rebar.

The painted gongs seem to be the best, with electronic ear muffs you can hear them plus if the paint is fairly fresh you can see the impacts. We've used scrap metal and old disc blades, but then some of the big rifles are too rough on the metal, so we've started using AR500. The AR500 is fairly expensive, but very durable. My sons love to shoot so I just turned them loose and they built a pretty good setup, I buy the steel, they do the work.
