For those forum members in southwest Montana here’s an opportunity to weigh in with support for a new shooting range near Logan.

This would provide additional shooting facilities a few miles from the existing private range on state property that is already heavily used by shooters without adequate berms or a centralized shooting area. I think it’s a great opportunity for Bozeman/Three Forks area shooters to have another place to shoot safely.

Public comments in support are due by Sept. 20.

Having weighed in with support for this and monitoring, it appears that the range will be developed.

Meantime, idiots using the State land shooting range near Gallatin Gateway blew up tannerite, started two large wildfires, shot bullets over neighboring properties, left litter and other target and ammo garbage all over, shot in night darkness, and finally pushed DNRC into closing the range with "CLOSED TO TARGET SHOOTING YEAR ROUND".

Once again gun-nut idiots have ruined and banned public land recreation for the rest of us!

I was really surprised at what was a nice public range in Watertown Sd that is a no cost range. It does not have range officers or safety officers. It has video cameras. I went there when it was new and things were great. Went back this year. Shocked at what I saw. The backer boards were shot off so the idiots started attaching the targets to the remaining post. The post are almost shot off in some of the bays. A kid was attaching his target on the pistol range while his dad was showing his mom how to load a magazine and jack a round into the chamber while his son was down range. Not everyone should own or use firearms. There really isn't an idiot test. It seems like not having any hard and fast rules at a public range without supervision is not a great idea.

We need more public, free, easy to access shooting ranges. Only way to combat the issues that result in seasonal shooting restrictions on national lands, and shooting bans on state lands.
