Hey Everyone,

As some know, I will be going bear hunting on POW September 7-17. However, if possible, I am going to try and kill a blacktail too. So here are my questions: Where are the deer located in mid-september? Can I still be successful in the alpine? Any general mountain areas that you recommend me looking into? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

Most years the alpine in early September would be fine. This year it is a "probably" due to a cold wet summer. What people seem to be seeing is the deer are down in the sub-alpine where it is warmer. Plenty of food everywhere due to the wet. This may change if the weather pattern changes. Look for complex terrain where you can get high and glass down into pocket muskegs. Look for muskegs that are forbs and grass, not moss. The ones you want show up on Google Earth as a light green, not dark tan/brown. The aerial survey conducted last fall found 7 deer on the southern portion of the island for every deer on the north end.
