Buddy wants to cash in his 6 CO mule deer points. I have 8 elk points. Thinking about doing a late season combo hunt.

I burned my deer on a late season plains hunt. We had a blast but I’m not convinced he can draw it with 6, I drew with 8 and it was a fluke. Would like to maximize these points as much as possible, even if that rules out a combo hunt.

I looked at the tag draw odd services. Hunting fool isn’t updated and GoHunt is 169 with 100 cash back from Randy.

Hoping for some advice from the group before I restart that subscription for this one hunt. PM are welcome. Thanks

I don't see any need for a service. Data is all there and free from CO. Never count on a "fluke" draw from CO, but you might be one of the lucky ones at the final point level in a given year. The only mystery CO draw has left (until 2028, with a random element thrown in) is how many more points good units will take each year. Same? +1? More! I have never seen any unit I am
interested in hunting go backwards.

Oh... and I'd take those 8 points on a Sept elk hunt in several places. 6 deer points? Not so much.

I don’t really have unit advice but I would turn it into 2 separate trips, even if it’s over 2 seasons. I prefer to just focus on one tag for an out of state trip.

I’ve been chasing that hunt and was always 1-2 behind. It dropped last year and I finally drew. Boy and I had a blast and shot a nice buck.

If you’re wanting to do a later season combo hunt, pick a unit with otc elk tags. At least that way, only one person has points in the game and you can focus on his deer tag and if you get lucky and see a bull, fill your tag. I’ve deer hunted a handful of units in Colorado every year(except 2)since 2015 thanks to the reissue. What I’ve learned in that time is, we are always around the deer and in some good bucks and hardly ever see elk. I think I’ve seen legal bulls two of those years. I feel like it might bring extra stress by drawing both an elk and deer tag.
I wouldn’t pay for a draw service like huntinn fool. Just get on the statistics page on game and fish and do some research. I feel like the only thing huntin fool is good for, is bringing attention to units and causing major point creep.

We hunt together every other year and our points don’t match. I’m getting into no mans land and would rather burn them. He wants to try and chase deer. I hate being along for the ride when I could do something with my kids instead.

Normally, I would agree with you though.

It comes with my OnX. Although it’s not very user friendly.

CPW does have that huge spreadsheet. I use it frequently but don’t know crap about CO units besides the 2 I’ve hunted. The GO hunt trophy potential helped me pick those units.

Feel free to send a PM if you have questions about units

I think your idea is a good one if you can find a unit. Only way to guarantee you guys see a nice 6x6 is not having an elk tag.

Yeah, I feel guilty hunting my own tag in the fall when I could be with my kids. It seems like I either miss Halloween or their fall break.

The highest elk point unit I've hunted was 6 points & the hunting was better in my OTC unit. It was my buddies tag & I was so unimpressed that the next fall I used my 6 points for a 1 point first rifle tag in our OTC unit. I would try to pick his deer tag in an OTC elk unit & talk him into just hunting your elk tag next year and split the meat with him.
