Overall, the bird season is looking up for Iowa. I would have predicted the opposite, but I can be a bit pessimistic occasionally. I'm happy to be wrong.

Heard several cackling on public ground while fishing in east Iowa this year.

Good to hear! I'm thinking Hank and I may make a return visit to IA this fall. Maybe more than one...

Considering trying south of 80 for at least a part of or one trip to improve my chances at bumping into some quail.

I hunt mostly north of 80, but have done a bit in the Southeast-Southcentral area. There are some quail, and a lot more interesting ground, but I don't know if there are really more birds.

Gus and I will begin on Saturday with Teal. This will be hard for him. He will be thinking pheasants.
