So, it's Super Bowl Sunday and I decided not to do a damned thing all day except watch football. I made some food, but I include that in part of the football experience. So, I'm sitting here in my computer chair...because it swivels and I can watch TV, plus it's the most comfortable chair in the house...next thing you know, I'm bouncing around in forums here and on Archery Talk after catching up on Facebook. OK, that's normal...but I'm NOT going to do anything else today except watch football!!! Next thing I know I'm on the Oklahoma hunting websight. DAMNIT!!!! I turn around and watch some pregame crap and next thing I know I'm on the Wyoming websight. DAMNIT!!! Turn around and watch some more TV and next thing I know I'm cruising forums again looking into hog hunts. DAMNIT!!! Watch somemore TV and next thing I know I'm on Google Earth playing around with where I wanna hunt elk and bear this year. DAMNIT!!!

There needs to be a disclaimer about how addicting on your own hunting is...it becomes a way of life

I turned off the game, boring. And here I am. Been to AT, MM, and Bowsite too.
Watching an Elk hunt on TV.

Looking at unit 86 here in Southern Colorado for elk and bear...OTC archery elk tags and I should have enough points for rifle bear. I'm sticking close to home for deer since they made my whole part of the state whitetail only and archery has 3 seasons that don't interfere with rifle seasons (but might still do a doe rifle hunt in western CO). Looking at 86 again for rifle elk, if not unit 70 while I'm doing the rifle doe in 70. Archery antelope if I don't draw a rifle tag for a buck (but still looking at rifle doe more than likely). Looking at Wyoming for antelope too, plus Oklahoma for more deer and prolly NY for deer also since I'll be out there for the holidays and NY seasons fall about that time and I might hit TX for a hog hunt. So far that's it....lol

John,

You have a busy season ahead of you. I had to turn my Colorado elk tag in this year, but I hope to again hunt elk this year. My oldest son and I try to hunt every year near Grand Junction. My youngest has never been able to join us because of his company's annual meeting schedule. He has changed jobs and it is hunting friendly(very friendly), so I hope this year to have both sons in elk camp, plus hope to have my brother from Alaska in camp. He is battling two cancers at the moment. He wanted me to join him for a caribou/moose hunt last year, but his health cancelled those plans. My oldest son and I had a wonderful spring black bear hunt with him in SE Alaska. I hope he can beat these beasts and we can hunt and fish Alaska again.

I'm sorry to hear about your brother. But, having your sons in camp is always a good thing. I have some friends out around Junction...maybe some of us from the forum can get together and kill stuff at some point

John,
Awhile back I asked some questions about southern CO elk hunting and you graciously answered with some useful info. At that time you mentioned Unit 86. I've done a little research since then and it appears that this unit doesn't have much for altitude. If I hunt the 2nd rifle hunt, am I going to be out of luck if there hasn't been any "weather" to drive the elk down? As usual, thanks for any information that you can offer.

86 has alot of varied terrain that the elk like. It does have some altitude, just not what the guys further west get. Second season is a crap shoot weather wise. 3 years ago I was hunting third season in shorts and this past year I was bundled up and one year it rained like crazy. One thing you can never count on here in CO, anywhere in the state, is the weather. I think you'd still find elk in second season, you'll just have to look a little harder
