Well, I'm back home from a fair but not great
turkey hunt. We got up in camp Friday night in time to watch some toms and
hens down in the field so I pretty well knew where they were going to roost.
Saturday morning, I went down to the bottom of our big field and set up near
where I thought they were going to roost at and waited in the rain (which
doesn't make for good turkey hunting) for about two hours and noticed a tom
come out into the middle of a small field so I went to calling him in and he come
running like he was on a string. When he was close enough to shoot, I
hesitated because he was a young bird, probably just two years old and I know
there are much bigger toms in the area but about the time he got within 17
steps, I decided the hell with this weather and busted him. He was 18 1/2
pound and had a 9 1/2 inch beard and a 1/2 inch spurs. This is by far not my
best bird to date but with the weather the way it was, I decided to take him
after all. Now, my buddy didn't score on Saturday, in fact somehow he
managed to miss a bird but he made up for it on Sunday. He took a 25 1/2
pound with a 10 1/2 inch beard and 1 inch spurs. This is no record bird but a
damn fine bird anyhow. Now, we still have next weekend and the weekend after
to try to fill our other tags.
