Just received email about Rule changes for 2023 Pronghorn:
The rulemaking was undertaken to adopt a new Pronghorn Antelope Rule, 19.31.15 NMAC, which wIII
become effective April 1, 2023. The current Pronghorn Antelope Rule will expire on March 31, 2023.
The new rule will include:
Shift hunt structure slightly to begin later in August and have some hunts begin in September and October.
Create a pronghorn hunt on Melrose Air Force Range in GMU 32.
Decrease license numbers in the combined hunts in GMUs 2, 7, 9, 10 from 15 bow licenses down to 10 and from 15 any sporting arm licenses down to 5.
GMU 15: eliminate the 2nd any legal sporting arm hunt but reallocate the 5 licenses to the first any legal sporting arm hunt.
GMU 16: eliminate the 2nd any legal sporting arm hunt but reallocate the 10 licenses to the remaining hunts.
Decrease each hunt in GMU 57 by 5 licenses each and moving these licenses to GMU 58.
Allow pronghorn hunting on Prairie Chicken Areas in the SE part of the state.
Adjust licenses on McGregor Range from 5 MB non-military and 10 MB military to 7 MB of each.
Change one of the public muzzle loader hunts in GMUs 50/52 to an any legal sporting arms hunt, decreasing licenses from 40 to 20, and decrease one of the private hunts from unlimited to 15 licenses.
A wide array of public comments were submitted. To view public comments, please visit www.wildlife.state.nm.us/commission/meeting-agendas/ and click on the Hearing Archive tab. It was not possible to incorporate all of the comments into the final rule as many of the comments were mutually exclusive. The resulting rule was based on what was best for the resource and overall hunter satisfaction.
