New Year,new dog,new projects.

Wondering if you got some rain down there. And we will need an update on the elk. Hoping for the best on that bull that has been hanging around.

71 and cloudy. Breezy.
Low of 54.

Bro called and said he'd be here Wed.
It started raining at 4pm when he called from Holbrook...he showed after 10pm and the rain stopped.
Most rain this year by far. Flowing water, on a shallow ridge.
Dotti has been confused since. 2 of them? LOL

He could barely see the whole trip in downpours.
We chatted as he set up a spot in the truck bed for the night.
Got Dotti back in the house and see you's...

Up and had coffee and chat.
We walk out in damp morning, moon peeping through clouds.
Wind out of the south. Dead quiet.
We get 200 yards and spot cows.
Then more cows. And a white body.
Wide 6x6. 300 yards.
We watch them leave...fist bumps.

John goes out this morning and come back later with a grin.
Another bull. BIG 6x6 went by @ 200 yards and a dozen cows.
He's out sleeping after chicken pot pies from pie shop.
Dotti beside me as I watch weather forecast.

2 bulls in area and the outfitter camp a mile away is no bother.
Dinner planned and an early turn in for big bro.

Dotti is sporting her new collar from Ken.
Knives to sharpen.
2 tropical storms about to dump here........finally.

Cool!

Lookin' good for big brother!

Rain starting here. Winter will start day after tomorrow...well, there will be snow on the mountain behind the house.

Love reading your small synopsis. Just enough to get the setting and plenty of room for imagination. I imagine it’s beautiful. Cactus, and mostly too effin’ hot for a Montana boy, but beautiful…

Much love Hank!

Hope y'all get a bull down but I bet you guy's will enjoy the time together no matter what. Don't you have a deer tag this year?

57 and dark clouds. Moon blanked out.
Dotti woke me and the rain that started at 1am stopped.
1st big band of the day. 2-3 inches coming.

Almost a mono culture RD. PJ's and the star is the gramma grass. Very few cacti and a couple yucca. A few shrubs that deer can eat.
The shortgrass prarie. The High Plains.
The 2 bulls came down off the mesa to the east. For this water.

Simple plan. Shoot before they leave at daylight.
Pitch black out... heard a truck door, musta forgot something . He's making coffee about now.
Nice tent camp. Dotti wanted to sleep out there too.....................

Guess this is a live play by play. Weather channel on mute. Silent out there.

Heavy rain in Flag is heading this way. Flooding in Flagstaff and Mesa Verde.

John is on his own. As is his wish.
Can't go out too soon....can't come in for a dump and make a racket with Dotti. LOL

No packer would take a 73YO solo guy. He can probly out hike them.
He found a set of bull tracks last evening that were huge. Just before rains ,along fenceline.

John watched one in the middle of a dozen cows walk out. He could barely see the rack and he stayed in the middle of the bunch.
5 bulls bugling around the house. I could only hear 2 inside.
One is next door...

Post breakie and it has been raining good for an hour.
Bulls shut up at sunrise or shortly after.
No others hunting in area. Outfitters drove off north @0530.

No clear shot til he was at fence @ 550 yards. Cows stayed in a bunch next to him.
So many bugles in area is good.
Timing is everything.
Maybe manana.

Dotti sleeping next to me.
Small fire to take off the rain chill.
Rain stopped.
Lots of food in the fridge.

54 and another downpour just stopped. Off and on all night.
Just barely light out now. Dark clouds blocking moonset.

Keeping Dotti inside has been confusing to her.
Calm on the couch but up at every sound out there.

Waiting to hear a shot , but it is pretty dark for legal shooting light.

Just got off the phone with my buddy in Glenwood. He said they're getting some good rain as well and happy to have it (granted he's not hunting in it).

Dark as night at sunrise and pouring rain.
Not a sound besides rain.
Bro finds cows and a good bull down by the well walking towards him. Then they turn at 175Y and go the other way and out. He can barely see the rain is so hard.
He walks up at 8am and sheds soaking rain gear. 54 degrees is warm for elk hunting. 100% humidity and heavy rains will soak you.
Says they weren't spooked and just fed the other way and went up the drainage .

Lost local tv and news for a while. A lot more rain on way.
John just went to look at what might be a bull down there. Dotti along side.
No bugles nor shots in the draw.

Got 3/4" this morning. Sunny breaks between dark clouds.
Inch and a half of rain since Wed. and good bulls with cows.
Bro brings the good juju.
Patience and seize the moment, opportunity hunt.

51 and partly cloudy.
Bro came back around 8am and did not see one. But alot had been here.
Bull still bugling next door in the trees to the south and one had just bugled from the north side.

Dotti woke me @0330 and I heard bugles til I got up. Then a few more. Close to the house.
A cow had barked outside his tent around 0500. Tracks right outside my loop road.
We went to town and at my gate was a big set of tracks heading out. Fresh.
Headed south on my road and 2 groups of cows had just gone out. Another 2 sets of bulls with each.
On the way out on my northeast corner a big group of cows had left and another bull.
Another cow group and a solo bull track set.
All fresh.
They left early.

Got breakfast burritos and got some flyswatters. Rain brings the last flies.
We checked down at the tanks and smiles grew. Tons of sign from last night. Rubs and wallows.

Watching last nights game post showers and its getting dark.
Flood watches up here til 8pm.
Clearing for morning hunt.

Smiles and a nap while it rains.
