I'm biting the bullet and applying for the draw in this unit. Should I get lucky and draw, this will be completely new to me. Good luck to all that are putting in for the draw!

Good luck, you have less than 1% draw odds. But hey, you're not gonna draw unless you put in :). PM me if you get lucky. I used to live in Las Cruces and spent alot of time up there.

That is a great unit. I always hunted somewhere else when I lived there, as it was even hard to draw back then (90's). There is no bad area and all the mountain areas around Cloudcroft, Mayhill, Sacramento, north to the reservation, hold elk at some point.

You will normally not have to fight the weather too much and there is a good chance at a decent bull if you are willing to work hard. Access to the whole area is real good, with lots of roads. I believe that there are several good outfitters around, if you choose that direction over DIY.

I lived in Alamogordo for 10 years and had a blast mz hunting deer in that country. I only killed one cow elk there, as it was tough to draw, so I went elsewhere.

Draw the tag first. Help will follow. I agree with sbhooper

My favorite deer unit, Never could draw an elk tag, My brother has tagged there several times; Most were late winter cow tags,; but I think he has had at least 2 bull tags.

Not unusual to see more elk than deer when hunting deer.
