I propose a very simple solution: make the sale of antlers illegal with a hefty fine. Solves problems like this and also neuters the dorks that take shed hunting way too seriously.

Seriously though, this seems like something a bunch of E-4s would try to pull off. You wouldn't think that officer pilots would be some reckless. The poor decision making alone should cost them their wings.

So, just thinking outloud here. Were they out training and someone spotted a nice set of sheds so they touched down to grab them? Or how did this play out exactly? Trying to beat the crowd and mistook private land for public?

Hypothetical - do you think this makes the paper if it were 30 years ago? Does the local landowner call the sheriff? Would they want the antlers returned?

Its possible that profit incentive drove them to their decision to trespass and steal. Its also possible that the landowner also called the sheriff because of the antlers value and might not have cared much beyond calling and asking why they decided to land.

Im far from certain, but it could have been a relatively innocent act done out of a lack of maturity and not malice or to profit off of resources they dont own. Could also be a pervasive behavior amongst this crew and/or others, with intent to sell them. Hopefully the investigation reveals more relevant details.
