Its been a bummer season here for me. The weather has been terrible for the most part, one day we had wind gusts to 50mph. On my second day i jumped a bird that was hiding in a bush i guess, it took off running and i just knew it was black enough to be a male so i leveled it. Turns out i stooped to shooting my first Jake . A real small one at that. Oh well, i guess with the weather it will do. here he is.... all 14 lbs of him

This weekend i went up to do a little more hunting and didnt hear much at all. I decided to rest for a while so i took off my fanny pack, dropped down against a oak tree and HOLY SHIT a bird jumps up from directly on the other side of the tree. I mean it was 12" from the tree!! It starts flopping around acting like it is hurt, grunting and groaning. I knew right away what was up. i looked on the other side of the tree and sure enough, heres a nest with 12 eggs in it!
I left her alone to go back to sitting. That night i got pretty wasted at an outdoor concert at a local hick bar and got up at 5AM the next morning, went outside to piss and listen for gobbles, nothing. I went back to bed and slept in. Later i went back to show Cletus the nest and it was gone! then i saw a shell, and another, and another.
I removed the leaves where the nest was and there were 4 eggs left only. DAMN COONS, i hate those things. I wonder if the hen covered it up or the coon did. Heres a picture of a pretty rough looking Schmalts holding a few eggs.

Sounds like an eventful season even though you were looking for a bigger bird.

I used to be able to party hard and still get up and hunt all day. Those times are gone and I am forced to hit the bed early if I am going to be worth a shit in the morning.

I am planning on getting into turkey hunting next season, so if you have any tips I would appreciate it.

Way to go Schmalts ! Kevin and I saw a grey squirrel harvesting eggs on our last weekend of hunting. Yes I said a Grey Squirrel.. Who would have ever thought that these little bastards would eat turkey eggs?

How did he not get his ass kicked? i would think a hen would open a can of whoop ass on a little squirrel! I know that the hens leave sometimes in the warm days and that leaves the eggs open season..

Well maybe it is time to go Coon hunting...
LOL...
Thanks for the story and the pics of the adventure!!!
