Took my 5 yr old lab to the vet this morning after he has had pain lately with his mouth. The vet diagnosed him with masticatory muscle myositis. It's an autoimmune disease that affects the muscles that control the jaw. The vet said right away, "this is not good." Treatment is a steroid to manage the symptoms. I haven't had time let to do my own research into it. Just curious if anyone has dealt with MMM and if so, how'd your dog respond over time to treatments.

A friends dog was recently diagnosed with the same thing. Steroids made it better, then got worse again.

Turns out it was actually a misdiagnosed abscessed tooth. By the time they figured it out the infection had destroyed one of his salivary glands and his tear duct on that side. They’re on surgery #3 now due to the incorrect diagnosis.

Wishing your dog the best. If it is masticatory myositis then unfortunately it’s a management situation, no real cures, from my understanding.
