Low mag, High Quality

My Leupolds have always worked well for me for set and forget scopes.

Yeah same here. Even the variations dudes were finding in the aforementioned drop tests are relatively small at east coast whitetail hunting distances. I just don't get the 30mm LPVO trend. I carried a lot of LPVOs on service rifles in my day, and can't ever recall thinking "Man, I sure wish I had a setup that would do the exact same thing as this but weighed 25% more."

Flexing on us! That's a sweet setup. Very tempted to attempt my Pronghorn doe tag with my 1900 era Marlin 1893 this year... needless to say, no magnification associated with that rig, although adding a peep would make it a way more capable hunting setup.

This was my ''doe rifle'' one year.

Not yet Brent. I'm getting there. I will have it with me if I draw an antelope tag. But, I plan to carry it for mountain whitetails. mtmuley
For some, hunting vintage is an evolutionary process. It starts as a '''back up'' then maybe a doe rifle or a one-day-a-year rifle. For me, I kinda started there, but not everyone does.

But truly hunting vintage means leaving the modern stuff at home, even (and most especially) when trying to fill a bucket list tag. There is nothing like putting all your marbles on an antique.

How far you take it, is up to you. But I do not think I have ever gone home hungry or missed out on a wall hanger because I hunt the old stuff.

Why just a doe?

Tough as a nonresident. I have a 96 hour window to kill an elk this year, a thousand miles from home. If I strike out on that, I'm hosed until '26 unless I can sneak out over Thanksgiving or Christmas to fight it out for a Whitetail on public. I'm a big "short range hunting" guy, but leaving 70% of your range on the table in addition to all the other disadvantages we have would be a one legged dude in an ass kicking contest.

Separately, ever try any copper monolithics in any of your older stuff? Doesn't seem like there should be any compatability issues as long as you keep antique pressures in mind while loading

I am a nonresident more often than not. Does not matter to me. And if you do your home work well, you may not give up as much range as you think. It is about the hunt, not the kill.

If zero retention for drops is the biggest priority you’re going to have to go 30mm, and a Trijicon accupoint 1-4 would probably be the way to go. For a lever gun I’d probably go with a fixed 4x Leupold.
I second this. I would highly recommend the 1-4 with the triangle post tritium reticle. Very fast to use and accurate as well.
