A-con- If the price of scrap metal increasing was not an integral part to the increased theft of copper...what do you feel is the reason for the increase in the amount of copper being stolen now compared to when the value of scrap metal was low? This isn't even a social issue and you can't figure that out. It's a simple case of economics. I learned this in the first year of economics and you're making it a statement about the liberal media. When the risk of getting caught is diminutized by the reward of not getting caught...you will see more theft. Gains vs. losses thats all. It isn't liberal/ conservative or a social issue at all. At the same time, increase the punishment for getting caught (raise the risk) and you will see less theft...Pretty simple really.

agreed to a point, you will ALWAYS have thrill theft and just people who steal not so much due to the risk v. reward factor but moreso that they are just stupid fuggers to begin with....and that's a fact.
Even in the theft I spoke of (where I work) is the "reward" of $100 in scrap EVER going to be worth the risk of breaking into a Federal facility? Especially one in which if you a bumbling kinda crook you can end up frying yourself!
They'd have better risk/reward selling hot tv's out of the back of a Best Buy truck in the middle of downtown!
MarvB- Even in thrill theft, part of the reward is the adrenaline rush/ thrill of not getting caught or risk of getting caught. These are probably the most difficult types of thefts to stop because it isn't based on a monetary reward. Your example of the copper wiring where you work is the same thing. Only it sounds like the risk (of getting seriously injured or killed) isn't a known risk to the dumbass...oops, I mean thief. The risk can encompass more than just the jail time and the reward can be more than just the monetary gain. However, in the case of the article...the factor that has changed is the price of scrap metal which is why it is a meaningful part of the story...not the liberal press.

Marv gets it. I am surprised that A-con and NHY are not bright enough to understand that a good portion of the increase in the theft of the scrap metal is due to the high prices of the scrap metal.
It has got to be a strange life for A-Con and NHY to look to Schmaltz for confirmation of their attitudes.
