Lever Guns, what would you choose & why?

I really like this Remington/Marlin 1895 GBL .45/70. I need to do something with the trigger, it’s too heavy for my taste, but otherwise I like it. IMG_4012.jpeg

This buck followed a big doe out of the brush on opening morning. He was standing in a Sumac thicket when I saw him, I was using a 300 grain cast bullet hand load running just shy of 1400 fps. I fired the first shot at probably 80 yards though a small opening in the brush and he took off running but stayed right on the does trail. The doe had crossed a shooting lane about 75 yards in front of me and when he hit the open spot I shot him again. The post mortum revealed that the first shot had (upper hole) had key holed and skidded along his ribs. The second shot was on the money and he didn’t make it 35 yards.

I have a couple of other Marlin lever guns and my dad’s old Savage 99B that I killed my first deer with so many years ago. I guess I’ll always have a soft spot for lever actions 😁

I won’t get a chance to choose it, but I would love to see a savage 99 or Winchester 88 back in production. Such fine little handy rifles with some serious center fire cartridges like the 284, 308 and the 358 Winchester. It’s just a lot of versatility in that little rifle.
