Anyone have any recent experiences hunting Kodiak for Sitkas? I would like to make a trip next year, any tips as to timing and lodges would be appreciated. A semi- guided trip would be nice, a chance to mix in some duck hunting would be great.

Went last year, DIY. With my 2 brothers and dad. Our dates were Oct 20-November 4 to coincide with bear season. Our primary target was a brown bear for my dad but we each killed a blacktail. We were flown into and stayed at a usfws public use cabin.

We were happy with the boat that chartered us to rasp Island for our elk hunt and we got a deer as well. The other deer tag could have been filled as well. Doing what we did via charter boat and hiking up to the alpine isn't for the faint of heart though

We had a 16’ zodiac with a 25 hp motor. The bay we were on was 14 miles long so the boat opened up a lot of territory. But it easily could have been done without a boat.

As Seeth said don’t let the terrain fool you. It’s steep and wet and slippery. the vegetation was either solid alders and willows or waste high grass that grabbed your boots every step. It would easily take 3 hours to climb to the top from the salt.
