Idaho Unit 72 Late Archery Mule deer Hunt

Unit 72 is mostly winter range. The numbers during the late archery hunt will depend on whether weather pushes them out of the surrounding units. Deer numbers in 72 have been down for a long time, so the late archery season was restructured to help bring the population back. Harvest didn't seem to be causing the population decline, but hunters chasing deer through deep snow in late December may have taken a toll. The dates have been moved up several weeks to stop hunters from pushing deer through deep snow.
The up side is that some of the best deer country in unit 76 has been added to the hunt to compensate for the earlier dates. A lot of the big bucks that winter in unit 72 come out of unit 76. If you have fair weather during the hunt, look to the east into unit 76 for bucks that haven't completed the migration.
