Waterfowl Seasons Set by Commission

Idaho will return to a zone system for this year's 107-day waterfowl seasons. The Idaho Fish and Game Commission set waterfowl seasons on August 14. Unlike elk zones, these don't restrict where a person can hunt. These zones represent different opening and closing dates in different areas of the state.
After reviewing data with federal authorities and other states, the department proposed returning to a zone system with northern and eastern Idaho, including the Panhandle, Clearwater, Salmon, Upper Snake and Southeast regions opening both duck and goose seasons October 4 and ending January 16. Pintails and canvasbacks would be hunted only from October 4 through December 2. The Fort Hall area will probably be under the same season. The department recommended, and the commission approved, that the Southwest and Magic Valley regions seasons run from October 11 through January 23 for both ducks and geese. In these two regions, pintails and canvasbacks will be open only October 11 through December 9.

Limits will be the same as they were last season, with a total daily limit on ducks of seven, and four on geese in most of the state, three in the Magic Valley area. There are further restrictions on the numbers of some species that may be taken; be sure to check the regulations books, which should be available by mid-September.

The youth waterfowl hunt (age 15 or younger, accompanied by an adult with a valid Idaho hunting license) is set for September 27 and 28 statewide.
